Handed over to our local partners, the Bioresource Research Centre, all of the bears had wounds caused during their time in bear baiting events — a brutal blood sport where bears are forced to fight against trained dogs for entertainment. After being taken to the Balkasar sanctuary, the bears were sedated so that their wounds could be properly treated. The team at Balkasar has recently reported that all three bears appear to be responding well to veterinary treatment. Thanks to the support and generosity of WSPA donors — Zilla, Rene and Sihu will now live peaceful lives in beautiful enclosures with trees to climb and pools for swimming. Over 60,000 animals in the Yen Thuy District are continuing to suffer from a lack of food after 70% of the spring harvest crops were destroyed by the extremely dry weather conditions. In addition to providing emergency feed, WSPA is conducting a workshop for 13 animal health officers, and a community workshop for 150 households, in four of the most severely impacted communities to help prevent suffering like this from happening in the future.
