Learn More » | | Defending Wildlife | North Carolina Court Halts Spotlight Hunting of Coyotes Defenders of Wildlife joined a number of other conservation groups in court to stop spotlight hunting of coyotes at night. The hunting was occurring statewide and included areas that are inhabited by the only wild population of about 100 red wolves. After four critically endangered red wolves were shot and killed, a North Carolina court issued a temporary restraining order to stop the night hunts. Red wolves are similar to coyotes in color and size, making it virtually impossible for hunters to tell them apart.
