Three more bears have been freed

Three more bears have been freedZilla (meaning 'shadow'), Rene (meaning 'reborn') and Sihu (meaning 'flower') were recently freed from a life of bear baiting and taken to the WSPA-funded Balkasar sanctuary in Pakistan.

Handed over to our local partners, the Bioresource Research Centre, all of the bears had wounds caused during their time in bear baiting events — a brutal blood sport where bears are forced to fight against trained dogs for entertainment.

After being taken to the Balkasar sanctuary, the bears were sedated so that their wounds could be properly treated. The team at Balkasar has recently reported that all three bears appear to be responding well to veterinary treatment.

Thanks to the support and generosity of WSPA donors — Zilla, Rene and Sihu will now live peaceful lives in beautiful enclosures with trees to climb and pools for swimming.

UPDATE: WSPA provides emergency relief to animals suffering in Vietnam

WSPA provides emergency relief to animals suffering in VietnOur Response Team based in Thailand has begun providing emergency feed and assistance to thousands of animals affected by the on-going drought in North West Vietnam.

Over 60,000 animals in the Yen Thuy District are continuing to suffer from a lack of food after 70% of the spring harvest crops were destroyed by the extremely dry weather conditions.

In addition to providing emergency feed, WSPA is conducting a workshop for 13 animal health officers, and a community workshop for 150 households, in four of the most severely impacted communities to help prevent suffering like this from happening in the future.

Activelid'S Links, have you met Suzi, Milla and Rose?

Case_studies_donate-now.jpgDear Activelid'S Links,

Suzi was a circus bear who was kept in a small cage for years and only taken out to perform. She became so used to this confined and abusive existence that when she was rescued and released into the Zarnesti bear sanctuary she was overwhelmed by her new-found freedom. For over a month she stayed in one small area, hugging a tree to feel secure. Now she roams freely, enjoying the trees and pools of the sanctuary. Suzi's life has been transformed – thanks to the ongoing support of WSPA donors.

Did you know that monthly gifts from supporters like you represent nearly 60% of donations to WSPA? Our life-saving projects – like the Zarnesti Sanctuary – rely heavily on this valuable, ongoing support.

And right now, we urgently need more people to sign up.That’s why I’m writing to you today to personally invite you to join our Animal Rescue Team by making a monthly gift of $10.

Let me show you what $10 each month could do:

Case_studies_rose-t.jpgRose is an elderly donkey who was abandoned by her owner and found starving and badly injured. Her face and ears had been torn apart by a pack of wild dogs. Zvika Tamuz, who runs the WSPA-funded Pegasus shelter in Israel, gave her antibiotics, bandages and pain relief. Thanks to the care of the Pegasus staff, Rose has made a good recovery. As she remains terrified of dogs, she is still being cared for at the shelter. We hope that in time, we may be able to rehome her.

$10/month could help care for Rose and all the other Pegasus donkeys for about a day.

Case_studies_milla-t.jpgMilla had been used in bear baiting events before her owner agreed to surrender her last year. The scars on her face are a sign of the life of terror she led in the baiting rings. When Milla arrived at the Balkasar bear sanctuary, which is funded by WSPA donors, she had her wounds treated and her painful nose ring and chains removed. With the expert care she has received, her condition has quickly improved and she has embraced her new life in the sanctuary.

$10/month could feed a rescued bear like Milla for two months at the Balkasar sanctuary.

Case_studies_puppies-t.jpgPinko lives in Bangladesh. She is a young dog with two puppies, who are happy, healthy and well-cared for. But last year, dogs like these were being poisoned because of fear of rabies. Despite being a family pet, Pinko’s mother was caught and poisoned. Her death would have been agonizing. Now, thanks to WSPA donors' support of our Collars Not Cruelty campaign, dogs like Pinko and her two puppies are being vaccinated against rabies and protected from cruelty.

$10/month could vaccinate and collar all the dogs in four small villages in Bangladesh.

Right now, many more animals like Suzi, Rose, Milla and Pinko desperately need your help to escape lives of cruelty and neglect.

Will you give just $10 each month to help them as the newest member of our Animal Rescue Team? It's an easy and convenient way to give. You'll receive a consolidated tax receipt for all your donations at tax time, and you'll also receive our WSPA News magazine twice a year, with news about the animals your monthly gifts are helping.

Please, join WSPA today and reach out to more animals in need.

Thank you.
