Nearly 1,000 Dead Wolves

War on Wolves

Emergency: Stop the War on Wolves!

OR 16 gray wolf credit ODFW

(c) ODFW

Nearly 1,000 wolves have been killed by hunting and trapping since Congress delisted them in parts of the Northern Rockies, back in 2011. Wolves have only recently been restored to the Northern Rockies yet they are under attack everywhere they roam.

Donate

Please donate today to support our efforts to save wolves in habitats across the country.

Dear Activelids,

In the coming days we will reach a heartbreaking milestone:

The 1,000th wolf will die from hunting and trapping in the Northern Rockies since Congress stripped gray wolves of their Endangered Species Act protection in 2011.

Mothers, pups and packs have fallen to hunters’ bullets and traps – 990 at last count in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. It’s a tragic, unsustainable toll, and it cannot be allowed to go on.

We need you now more than ever. Please donate now to help Defenders fight for wolves and other endangered wildlife wherever they are threatened.

Make no mistake – there is a war on wolves and these magnificent and misunderstood top predators need our help.

Among the most recent victims of this reckless killing was OR16, an Oregon-born male wearing a radio collar. He was shot on January 19th in Idaho.

OR16 was a remarkable wolf. His wanderings took him through three states and he even swam the Snake River. Yet, after his astonishing journey, he made the tragic mistake of crossing into Idaho. He lasted only 33 days there, and was the second Oregon wolf to be killed in Idaho.

Now we’re looking at the loss of nearly 1,000 wolves in just two years. This accelerated killing is an example of how states like Wyoming are managing wolves as vermin to be eliminated, not as wildlife to be managed responsibly. There is no basis for allowing this many wolves to be killed this quickly. It’s 100% politics that is driving state management.

Please donate now to support our work for wolves across the Lower 48 -- and protect the wildlife and special places you care about.

The restoration of wolves in the Lower 48 is one of the greatest success stories of the Endangered Species Act. It’s tragic that in this day and age we are still fighting myths, misconceptions and old hatreds toward these magnificent animals.

Defenders of Wildlife is America’s premier advocacy organization working to protect endangered wildlife. Our science and legal teams are renowned in the field. We are the voice of wildlife in Washington, DC – and we are your voice as well.

We will not let politics get in the way of our work for wolves. Your urgent support today will make a big difference.

Thank you for all that you do.

For our wildlife,

URGENT: Aerial gunning of wolves in Idaho could begin soon!

Activelids --

We're in the home stretch of reaching our $100,000 goal to help stop the potential aerial gunning of wolves in Idaho.

We only have around $13,000 to go -- won't you help put us over the top?

Please make an emergency gift to help us raise $100,000 to ensure that we can continue to fight for Idaho's wolves and other wildlife.

Please donate today to support our efforts to protect Idaho's wolves.

Dear Activelids,

It's the most powerful weapon in the anti-wolf arsenal. It could happen so quickly they won't have a second to escape. Idaho's wolves could soon be gunned down from the sky — and we need to fight this now!

Last year, Idaho called in federal Wildlife Services to kill wolves from aircraft in the central part of the state to artificially boost game populations in the region. It appears that they may be doing it again.

Our work to save wolves and other wildlife is urgent and ambitious — and so is our goal — help us raise $100,000 to ensure that we can continue to fight for Idaho's wolves and other wildlife.

Last week, the Idaho Fish and Game Commission approved a proposal to pay Wildlife Services $50,000 to launch a new round of targeted wolf killing - which could include aerial gunning. Again the excuse is artificially inflating elk herds in parts of Idaho to make hunting them easier.

This plan is misguided and wrong!

Idaho Fish and Game officials have a completely unproven theory - that wiping out entire packs of wolves in elk country will help hunters be more successful in killing elk.

We've seen no evidence to support this likely aerial slaughter, and no reason for President Obama and his Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to allow it. Instead, it's just one more excuse to treat wolves as vermin, rather than the magnificent creatures that they are, and to completely ignore their rightful place in the ecosystem.

More than 400 wolves have been killed in Idaho in the past year.

Your urgent donation will go towards our goal of raising $100,000 to help stop the relentless attacks on Idaho's wolves and other endangered species wherever they are threatened.

Defenders Leads Wolf Conservation in the Northern Rockies.

Your urgent donation will support Defenders' wolf-saving efforts in Idaho, including:

  • Recruiting and mobilizing grassroots wolf supporters to speak out against this wildlife travesty.
  • Convincing the Obama administration and Congress to reign in Wildlife Services and stop wasting resources to kill wolves to appease anti-wolf hunters.
  • Reaching out to the media to evoke public outrage over this senseless proposal.
  • Serving as a watchdog to monitor this and other anti-wolf proposals in Idaho
  • Supporting our coexistence work — our work on the ground with ranchers has saved countless wolves by protecting livestock with non-lethal deterrents.

These efforts, of course, are in addition to our tireless work to protect wolves in neighboring states, including Wyoming and Montana.

Make no mistake, there's a war on wolves raging in the Northern Rockies. But thanks to wildlife-lovers like you, we'll continue to fight for a safer future for our wolves and other wildlife. So please donate today and help us win the war on wolves!

Thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Damaging Budget Cuts Still Loom for Wildlife

Wildlife ConservationThe budget agreement signed into law to prevent automatic cuts under the Fiscal Cliff could still have damaging impacts on funding for endangered species, wildlife law enforcement, national wildlife refuges, and a host of other programs critical to wildlife conservation.

Take action now to protect funding for wildlife conservation.

A Magic Number for Cook Inlet Belugas

Beluga WhalesIn Alaska's Cook Inlet, the most isolated population of beluga whales is also the most threatened. Though this year's population estimate is a little higher than the last, the overall trend is still on a steady decline, and scientists are working to learn more about what could be keeping Cook Inlet belugas from recovering. One part of this year's survey, however, might offer a glimmer of hope.

How the Endangered Species Act Saved the Black-Footed Ferret

The black-footed ferret has come a long way since 1986, when just 18 of them remained in captivity. Today, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that about 750 ferrets exist in the wild. We still have a long way to go, but for a species twice on the very brink of extinction, we are within reach of an amazingly full recovery for the black-footed ferret.

"No Otter Zone" Finally a Thing of the Past

With an estimated population of only 2,800 off of California’s coast, the southern sea otter has finally caught a break! With your help, Defenders supporters sent more than 11,600 comments to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to support the repeal of the "no otter zone." And they did it! Now sea otters will be able to move and expand their range naturally, something that science shows a species needs in order to recover. This is a huge and long-awaited victory; one that we hope will allow the southern sea otter to move closer to recovery.

Defending Wildlife
The ESA Turning 40
Bald EagleAmerica would look a lot different today if we had not committed to the protections provided by the Endangered Species Act (ESA), a piece of landmark legislation that was signed into law almost 40 years ago. The ESA has been incredibly effective in keeping species like bald eagles, Florida panthers and other iconic wildlife from extinction, and continues to not only prevent extinction, but also steadily improve the conservation prospects for the seriously imperiled species it protects.

Read more about how the ESA has helped protect and preserve wildlife.
