WOLVES UNDER SIEGE: A National Crisis

War on Wolves

WOLVES UNDER SIEGE

USFWS

Wolves have only a fragile hold on survival,  yet they are under attack everywhere they -- roam even right outside of Yellowstone National Park!

Donate

Please donate today to support our efforts to recover and save wolves in their natural habitat.

Dear Activelids,

Wherever they roam, America’s wolves are under the gun.

The latest outrage is perhaps the most disturbing -- wolves from the Yellowstone National Park packs are being shot just outside the park boundary. At least seven of them were radio-collared and were subjects of on-going conservation research and study.

We need your help more than ever. Please donate today to help Defenders speak up for wolves and other endangered wildlife wherever they are threatened.

We are fighting a nationwide war in defense of these magnificent and misunderstood top predators.

In the past few weeks alone:

  • You’ve helped us send more than 71,000 petitions to the governors of Wyoming and Montana demanding that they immediately put a stop to the wolf hunts in lands adjacent to the park.
  • Defenders filed a federal lawsuit to reverse a decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to strip Wyoming’s wolves of protection under the Endangered Species Act. Wyoming has opened most of the state to unlimited wolf killing and, even worse, wolves that have briefly roamed beyond the invisible border of Yellowstone National park have been shot and killed. We estimate that around 54 wolves have been killed in the state in the past two months.
  • The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission approved a temporary rule allowing spotlight hunting of coyotes at night throughout the state, including the area inhabited by the only wild population of red wolves, one of the world’s most endangered animals. Just last week, Defenders and our conservation partners won a court-ordered hold to this temporary rule. But at least four critically endangered wolves were shot and killed before the court could act. Fewer than 100 red wolves remain in the wild today and Defenders is actively engaged in North Carolina to ban the spotlight hunting of coyotes.

Your critical support provides Defenders with resources that are essential when responding to emergencies surrounding critically endangered populations like the red wolf and the recent killing of park wolves near Yellowstone.

Passion for conservation and preservation is what drives our mission at Defenders of Wildlife. We continue to be America’s leading wildlife conservation advocacy organization thanks to our scientists, legal team and supporters like you.

We will not let politics get in the way of our support for wolves. Your urgent support today will make a big difference.

Thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark, Defenders of Wildlife

P.S. These are desperate times for wolves, and they call for swift, powerful action. Your donation is urgently needed to help stop the war on wolves. Please give whatever you can today.

Wildlife Wins to be Thankful For

Thank You!

Dear Activelids,

Let's not sugarcoat it — these are tough times for wildlife lovers. But even the darkest times have inspiring moments.

Thanks to you and other steadfast wildlife lovers, we have some important victories to celebrate from this past year. Here are three things we are thankful for here at Defenders:

Make Way for Bison! We took a giant step in 2012 toward returning wild bison to the heart of their historic range in America's Great Plains. Sixty one pure American bison from Yellowstone National Park made a 500-mile journey to the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Eastern Montana. The move marks the beginning of efforts to restore wild bison herds of 1,000 or more to areas where they once thundered in the millions.

Roadless Rule Upheld. The Supreme Court handed conservationists a huge victory when they rejected an appeal to the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, allowing this rule to stay intact. The provision, signed by President Clinton in 2001, bans road construction or timber harvesting in nearly 60 million acres of National Forest lands. The rule protects more than 1,600 vulnerable wild plant and animal species whose habitat would be at risk if road building was permitted.

A Lone Wolf Arrives in California. There has not been a wild wolf in California since the 1920s. That is until OR-7, a young male born in Eastern Oregon, made his way into Northern California's Cascades region early this year. It was a landmark moment for wolf conservation, and for a while OR-7 was undoubtedly the world's most famous wolf.

We here at Defenders cannot thank you enough for your passionate support in 2012. Let's draw encouragement and renewed energy from these wins to meet the conservation challenges ahead!

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

Dear Activelid'S Links,

WSPA is launching an urgent appeal to stop the cruel farming of endangered sea turtles for food.

On the Cayman Turtle Farm, thousands of turtles are suffering every day in appalling conditions that have shocked even some of WSPA's most hardened wildlife staff.

We found disturbing evidence of cannibalism, disease and inbreeding – causing turtles to be born without eyes or with other massive deformities.

Will you give $15 to help them?

These naturally solitary creatures are trapped in prison-like tanks. They are fed an unnatural diet and paraded for tourists before being slaughtered for sale as burgers and steaks.

There is no humane way to farm sea turtles. They were never meant to live life like this.

We cannot stand by and let thousands of sea turtles suffer, every minute of every day.

Together, we can stop this cruelty for good.

Your gift of $15 could help build essential alliances so that we can convince the Cayman Turtle Farm to stop farming turtles for meat.

Please, help us stop sea turtle farming forever.

Josey KitsonThank you,
Josey Kitson
Josey Kitson
Executive Director, Canada

P.S. Your donation could help stop the suffering of these amazing creatures and make sure that sea turtles are kept wild. Please, donate $15 today.
