Give Panthers a BRAKE!

Help put panthers on the scoreboard! If we can raise enough to fund the ads, Florida's NHL hockey team - aptly named the Florida Panthers - will run ads during all eight of their home games during the month of March! Help us raise $50,000 by February 28th to get panthers on the scoreboard! Dear Activelids, Fewer than 160 Florida panthers remain in the wild, and 19 were hit and killed by vehicles in 2012 – this was a new record for the number of Florida panthers killed by vehicles in a single year.  The Florida panther is one of the most endangered mammals on Earth and we need your help to save it! In just over a week, we are launching a major public awareness campaign to alert Floridians to the plight of their official state animal – and to engage as many people as possible in our efforts to save it. Today, fewer than 160 of these beautiful cats remain in a shrinking patchwork of South Florida habitat. As human habitation expands into panther territory, collisions with cars and trucks have become a leading cause of panther deaths. We need to Give Panthers a BRAKE – literally. Our kick-off will take place at the home of Florida’s aptly-named pro hockey team – the Florida Panthers!  We plan to run a high-profile advertising blitz at all eight Panther home games in March. Average attendance this season has been about 18,000 people per game.  These ads will reach out directly to residents and drivers in Florida and remind them that the simple act of slowing down can help save their endangered state animal. But we must raise $50,000 by February 28th to get this campaign underway, so please hurry! The advertising blitz is a big step in our ambitious campaign to bring the Florida panther back from the brink, it aims to: Inspire Floridians to protect their panther through advertising and outreach campaigns like “Give Panthers a BRAKE!” Secure more panther habitat, allowing them to expand their natural range and thrive; Improve safe passage for panthers across roads; Work with Florida landowners to encourage responsible coexistence with panthers. No one at the hockey games will miss the message! Our call to action will be placed in numerous places throughout the stadium including: The jumbotron-sized scoreboard at the center of the stadium; The huge LED-powered ring of light that circles the stadium; The giant 20-foot by 20-foot video screen at the main entrance; PLUS radio announcers covering the games will call on all Floridians to give panthers a BRAKE! Emergency: Proposed Extermination of Montana Bison

Montana's Bison Need your Help! This is a critical moment for bison, these bills have the potential to end future bison success stories. Please donate today to support our efforts to protect America's iconic wild creatures. Dear Activelids, Are bison wildlife or vermin? In Montana, it's up for debate. Two bills amounting to nothing less than an extermination campaign against bison are making their way through the Montana state legislature. If these bills pass, it could be disastrous to our efforts to return bison to their historic habitat. Two more anti-bison bills are on their way this week, and up to six more are being drafted. We're pulling out all the stops to defeat these bills and we need your help. Please donate today to save bison and other imperiled wildlife. Among their deadly provisions, these bills: Would prohibit reintroduction of wild bison into Montana. This ban would include future reintroductions at the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, the site of last year’s historic return of genetically pure bison to the Great Plains after more than a century; Would establish a year-round hunting season for bison, with virtually no limitations; Would authorize private landowners to shoot on sight any bison that wandered onto their property; Would order state officials to exterminate or move any wild bison that migrate into Montana. It's been nearly a year since the historic return of 61 genetically pure Yellowstone bison to the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, marking the first reintroduction of Yellowstone bison to the Great Plains. As some of the only remaining genetically pure bison, and the only continuously wild herd in the country, Yellowstone bison are essential to the species' recovery. Now, these Montana bills have the potential to end future bison success stories, such as the planned reintroduction of Yellowstone bison to the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in Montana. And they're an insult to Native American tribes who have worked hard to return wild bison to their rightful place in the American landscape. Working Overtime to Protect and Restore Bison Defenders of Wildlife is leading efforts in Montana and in Washington, DC to give bison, wolves and endangered wildlife the crucial protection they need to recover. In the Northern Rockies, our field representatives are working directly with forward-looking state officials to speak up for responsible wildlife management policies. Defenders is working alongside tribal bison managers and councils to restore wild bison to tribal lands, as well as organizing the pro-bison citizens of Montana and encouraging them to speak out on behalf of bison, wolves and other Montana wildlife. Please help us continue this important work in defense of Montana's bison and endangered wildlife across the country.
